This virtual advocacy training program helps people living with mental illness, friends and family transform their passion and lived experience into skillful grassroots advocacy. Participants will learn how to develop the following skills:

Creating impactful and meaningful communications for legislators

Orchestrating a successful meeting with an elected official

A support group for adults (18+) healing from trauma. This group is held every other Thursday (4/29, 5/13, 5/27) and is open to the public. All are welcome to join us! Mental Health First Aid Training

Presented by: Mental Health Association of RI and Thundermist Health Center

Mental Health First Aid is a class that teaches attendees to identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders. The training provides participants with the skills needed to reach out and provide initial assistance to someone who may be developing a mental health or substance use problem or experiencing a crisis. As a bi-lingual, bi-cultural professional, the session’s lead facilitator, Jennifer Gaviria, is able to help address a broad range of concerns and questions from participants working in racially and ethnically diverse communities that face unique challenges to mental and emotional well-being.

This free session is available to anyone; the content is geared towards parents/caretakers and loved ones of middle and high school students.  In the presentation, participants will learn facts, statistics, and warning signs of mental illness, as well as how to talk to your child and work with school staff.  NAMI Ending the Silence includes two speakers:  one who shares an informative, research-based presentation, and one who is a young adult with a mental health condition, who speaks on their journey of recovery.  One in five youth lives with a mental health condition, yet less than half of youth with mental health conditions received any kind of treatment in the past year.  Many young people are afraid to speak up when they think they might need help.  NAMI Ending the Silence changes that.

Accessing Coverage for Mental Healthcare: KNOW YOUR RIGHTS!

Parity is the law. Insurance companies are required to provide coverage for mental healthcare, including for substance use disorder services, at the same level they cover physical health services. However, lack of mental health parity in insurance coverage is a form of discrimination that people with mental health and substance use disorders continue to experience. Join us to learn more about: changes in coverage for mental healthcare due to COVID-19; existing parity law and your rights; how to spot and respond to potential parity violations; how to advocate for yourself, a family member, or patient to get the insurance benefits needed.

Dissociative Identity Disorder: An Inside View on Multiplicity

After decades of stigma & erasure, those with dissociative identity disorder (DID) have begun breaking the silence on what it means to be many individuals in one body. Often called multiples or plurals, these people have built a rich community and understanding of themselves alongside therapists and researchers.
